When Microsoft first announced a free upgrade offer in 2016, it was presented as a limited offer that was to be made available for a year. This free offer prompted many users to take the plunge and upgrade their systems to the latest operating system. This was especially true as support for Windows 7 ended in January, 2020. Fast forward to today, it would seem that this free upgrade is still available for those who qualify for the upgrade. This would include owners of Windows 7, 8 and 8.1 users. Just recently, I tried it on a Windows 7 laptop and it worked fine, despite the long installation time.
How to Download Windows 10 for Free
As long as you have a licensed and activated copy of Windows 7, 8 or 8.1 (Home or Pro), you can follow these steps to upgrade for Windows 10:
- Follow this link to the Download Windows 10 website.
- Click the download tool button to start the scan
- You will be prompted to Upgrade this PC now, which will start the download process. You can also create an installation media (disc or flash drive), if you want to upgrade a different PC.
- Follow the prompts during the install and upon completion of the upgrade, you can verify the installation by going to Settings Update & Security > Activation, and you should see a digital license for Windows 10.
Given the current pandemic lockdown, this might be a good time to try this out. Another thing to keep in mind is you will also have the option to keep your personal files/folders, so this upgrade might be worth exploring.
