If you own one of the Amazon home assistant devices, like the Echo, you can appreciate the value in learning and how these devices can do more than just turn on lights, or even recall famous presidential quotes. At the same time, Alexa (I’m typing it quietly, so that she can not hear me) gets stumped on some questions, leaving users with doubt and frustration. This is especially true when the response is “I can’t find the answer to the question.” At this point, users will give up or just take their question to Google on their phone.
That will soon change, as Amazon recently rolled out a new feature called Answer Update, in which it will notify users when their Alexa has found an answer to an unanswered question. This not only closes this loose end, but it also shows the power of a device that continues to evolve and learn. Ultimately, that is the foundation of any smart device. Right?
Time to Learn
To activate this feature, simply say “Alexa, turn on Answer Update” to which she will respond “Okay, if you ask me a question and I don’t know the answer, but I find out later, I’ll notify you.” The notification will be on the device and likely on the app (that’s to be determined).
I’ve already enabled it on my Echo, so let’s see if I can stump it to really see this feature in action.
